Gelert Tent

STAR GAZER

During my final year I chose to tackle a competition brief run by "Ffres" Which is part of Design Wales. The competition brief was to design a tent for the modern family. The brief was set by Gelert, Which are leaders in selling excellent quality products for outdoor activities such as Camping.

I tackled the brief by using my own experiences with camping and by gathering research from other people. Using my own experiences I realized that camping was a way of bringing the family together once or twice a year to enjoy the great outdoors and have fun.

After a lot of design development and research my final design was complete. The "Star Gazer" Would be a six man tent that boasts plentiful space and storage. It has skylights that allow you to gaze at the stars, Which is something i enjoy when camping. The Star Gazer has a unique ventilation system and a unique canopy feature that allows the family to have shelter outdoors and their own private space. Other features I included with the tent were solar lights for the inside.

My Tent design was successfully short listed into the final 9 and after a presentation to the judging panel my design then went though to the final 3

EPS Glow

Every aspect of a products life, from manufacturing to disposal, must now be taking into account whilst in the design stage. With pollution and the decline of natural resources, designers must now take a sustainable approach to tackle the problem.

This project was about taking a sustainable material and utilising it to its full potential. EPS (Expanded polystyrene) is commonly used for packaging electrical Goods. The advantages of EPS are its 100% recyclable has good impact and insulation properties. With these advantages it could be used in many areas within the market such as furniture and lighting. My aim was to utilise the advantages of this material and use it in the design of an interactive lighting product. The project was to prove that designers can use un-conventional sustainable materials to produce an attractive, innovative product that will sell and can have a positive effect on the environment.

Right through the design stage the aim was to produce a sustainable product. It wasn’t just about using EPS. Care and thought was put into what light sources would be used, How simple but effective could we design the parts to reduce manufacturing processes, and how easy could we assemble the product in manufacturing and disassemble at the end of its life. Through thorough design development the out come of the project was an interactive, fun, lighting module that boast’s sustainability.

Phenom Toaster

My re-design of the toaster came about after coming across a few problems with the conventional toaster. Conventional toasters haven't really changed much over the years in terms of their appearance and the mechanism used to toast the bread. My aim was to possibly design a toaster that would stand out from others that are on the market.

When I toast bread I find there is no real way of making the perfect piece toast. Everybody's tastes are different and all bread varies from size, type, to how much moisture might be in the bread. I find when I toast bread I tend to pop the toaster up and down, visually checking the bread. I also found with research, that other people do this as well. With my new design I have incorporated a see-through casing where you can see the bread without actually popping the bread up and down. as well as making it look good in terms of aesthetics, its purpose is integral to the design.

Another Problem you can have with toasting bread is the temperature of the bread when you pick it out of the toaster. Even though its not hot enough to physically burn your skin it can be too hot to handle straight away. With my design I have incorporated a sliding tray mechanism. Basically you place the bread on the tray and it slides into the toaster. You can also de-attach the tray to use it as a toast rack. In that way the toast can cool down before you pick it up.
